Kitimat — it’s a northern B.C. town created in the 1950s to support an aluminum smelter, and it has a new slogan.

“Kitimat is not for everyone.”

The new PR campaign is intended to raise awareness in a cheeky way about the municipality of around 9,000 people that is a 45-minute drive south of the main highway linking northern B.C.

“With all the negativity out there these days, if you can have something out there that not only has somebody learning more about Kitimat, but has a smile on their face, then I think we’ve succeeded,” said Mayor Phil Germuth.

As Justin McElroy reports, it isn’t the first time a municipality has adopted unusual measures to generate attention — but there are likely other reasons Kitimat will be in the news in the months to come.
