Profession Profile

Visually stunning and surrounded by the Coast Mountains Range, Coast Mountains School District lies on the traditional and unceded territories of the Gitxsan, Haisla, Nisga’a and Ts’msyen Nations in beautiful Northwest British Columbia. The district serves approximately 4,200 learners across 19 schools in the culturally rich communities of Hazelton, Kitimat, Kitwanga, Stewart and Terrace. The district’s new visioning document – Engage, Ignite, Empower – focuses on student learning and well-being in inclusive and culturally responsive learning environments.

Quick Facts

  • In the early 1950s the need for teachers rapidly increased as families migrated to Kitimat.
  • By 1963, Kitimat had opened several schools including Mount Elizabeth Senior Secondary, Nechako Elementary, Kildala Elementary, Cormorant Elementary with others in the works.
  • School District 82 was created in late 1996 by the amalgamation of School District 80 (Kitimat) and School District 88 (Terrace).
